A Hawaiian public employee who accidentally caused a panic after inadvertently sending an incoming-missile emergency alert on Saturday has been reassigned according to reports.
The emergency department worker, who has not been named, will not be fired according to Hawaii Emergency Management Agency spokesperson Richard Rapoza.
“Part of the problem was it was too easy — for anyone — to make such a big mistake,” Rapoza told the Washington Post. “We have to make sure that we’re not looking for retribution, but we should be fixing the problems in the system. I know that it’s a very, very difficult situation for him.”
The agency has already put new safeguards on its system to prevent an accidental text alert again - including a cancel button that would immediately send out a correction if a message is sent in error again.
